Oh no! There's no link to #10 and I don't know how to do it. Help. Cormatin owners and any other creative types, Has anyone else out there decided on make, style and (most importantly) size of your range hood? KD suggested a 39 inch wide X 39 inch high painted black wood hood. It came...and now it is going! It is too big, too black and too ugly. DH flipped and said the whole thing must go in the dumpster. KD came by yesterday and said we could cut 6 inches from the top and raise it up 6 inches which would make it smaller. I think the problem is that it is so tall and so black. Perhaps a black undercabinet hood in 36 would work, or perhaps a 30 inch undercabinet. We need a box or cabinetry above the hood/vent to hide duct work. I was thinking VAH 30 inch, black, 600 cfm but it will take 3 weeks (maybe longer). If I get a 30 inch I'll have to have several cabinets remade. A 36 inch undercabinet hood would only mean 1 cabinet redo, but after seeing the 39 inch I'm worried it too will be to large. Does anyone have a pic with a cormatin with a 36 inch hood? Any suggestions? Thank you! Jennifer

We just got an e-mail saying that our Cluny1400 will be cleared through customs and delivered next week! Problem is we don't have a contractor and our plans are delayed 4 months- I simply don't have anyone to help me when it arrives. Can any of you report on the delivery process? I know the thing needs to be uncrated immediately. Have any of you stored your range while waiting for your project to start? HELP from those of you who have gone through this! Zola - I know your range is sitting in your living or dining room - who did you have move it into the house? I was under the impression that the delivery is to a garage only and that they won't bring it into the house. We don't have a garage (yet!) and I don't have a clue how this will all go. Reassurances?

Zola: I came into the Lacanche threads rather late. Did you happen to save them all like you did those wonderful marble threads? If so, could I please trouble you to send them to me? I would be very grateful. One through ten if you have them!! Thank you! Ivette P.S. Actually, ten should still be here, let me check. I can get that one myself no?? See you soon!

nocalgirl - Yes, the frieght company will only drop it off but don't worry as it will be no problem. Ours came without a crate and AC told us to unwrap it immediately and inspect it. My hubby took off all the grates and the doors and when you do that it really isn't that heavy. He and a friend carried it into the house and he said it was no big deal. I watched and it was pretty easy. We've had ours sitting here for a year as of the first week in June. Don't worry about not being ready for it from AC's standpoint. They are well aware of the remodeling process and they are very supportive. Not to worry! :o) Ivette, of course, I saved all those and I just tried to send them to you. The first file was way too large so I'll have to try and separate them as your server wouldn't accept it. Yowsa! It is almost 200 pages just parts 1 - 8. :o)

Dear Zolablue, I, too, am very interested in the lacanche, and would love to read threads 1-9 (I've devoured thread #10 already). I am new to this forum, but have learned so much from it, and would be most grateful for your trying to forward those threads to me, too. And to the rest of those out there on this forum with some Lacanche experience, I'd love to know: ** how is the size of the ovens? (I presently have a late-40's O'keefe and Merritt, and am agonizing over whether to have it spiffed up head-to-toe, or to take the plunge with a brand new range. This is a very difficult comparison to make, as there seem to be widely divergent camps out there -- the vintage-range afficionados, and the up-to-the-minute technologically modern proponents). ** how do people use the french top, vs. the option of the 18,000 btu fifth burner? I suppose I need more input about the French Top, as I can more easily imagine what to do with a high-powered burner. ** Does anyone have some of the accessories, such as the grill and griddle, the rotisserie, etc? How goo dare they? Worth the extra? ** Does anyone out there have a warming cabinet on their lacanche? How do you use it? How much does it hold? And lastly, if there are any Bar Area lacanche owners who would be willing to let me come see theirs in their home, I would be a grateful girl! Thanks!

Zolablue: Now we are really confused and wonder if you would be so kind as to forward the 1 - 9 threads to us also. We are juggling our range decision all over the map, from our original Five Star Choice (because of 1 gas & 1 electric oven in DF + grill + griddle), to the Wolf DF we fell in love with last weekend, and now the Lacanche - we are going back to our Lacanche catalogue and reassessing whether we should go french. We think any of the 3 ranges would work for us, but we love the romance, old fashioned charm and features of the Cluny, the F.L. Wright-ish design of the Wolf (great legs!) and the plain utility and value in the 5 Star. We are intrigued by the stories we've read on the Lacanche and the flexibility in cooking it offers. So we need to do a little more research now. Thanks in advance for your help! AnnaLee

Hi everybody! Just a quick update...we're finally in the drywall stage! Here's a picture of the "range wall." Zolablue, your help has been invaluable! Can't you just picture that "piano" of a range under that hood?! Everytime I look at that wall, I already see it with the Sully +2, the base cabs, the soapstone, the stuccoed hood...ah, my dream really IS coming true! I guess my range is in production now or it will be soon. It's due to arrive here at the end of July. I can't wait!

No Cal: We are on the Central coast on California, just thought I'd let you know that my Cluny 1400 (warming cabinet on right) was delivered on a pallet and bubblewrapped (no crate). We were lucky because we happened to have a forklift on the job at the time so it was easily moved into the garage on the pallet. The 1400 is pretty heavy so I agree that you will want to remove all the cast iron grates etc. before trying to relocate it. Good luck and look on the bright side, if there are any problems you will have time to correct them befor e installation.

Cluny owners: Do you find the interior size of your two ovens adequate for your needs and your roasting pan sizes? We are very interested, but have noticed the oven dimensions seem smallish. Can you easily cook a large turkey or a standing prime rib? Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Hey, guys, I cannot send attachments unless you email me first. :o) Also, I'd love to be able to answer some of your questions but I haven't been able to hook mine up yet although we're getting closer. You will find answers to all these questions on the old threads. About the oven size, that has been discussed quite a lot and unless you cook extremely large things on a regular basis I cannot see how this is a problem. I do however understand the concern as I had the same feelings before I saw the ovens in person. They are a really nice size and frankly I like them much better than a huge, cavernous oven that is often wasted space. I'm attaching the photo link to my Lacanche and if you scroll though you'll see a couple pictures where I've shown my oven open with something inside to try and offer perspective. Deb - LOVE the alcove! That is going to be something else! You must be so excited. They are here to drywall today (finally) and I'm just pumped to see it all taking shape myself. Your kitchen is going to be dynamite!

Zolablue: Just a thank you for your diligence. I've been reading through all the back threads you sent and they are most helpful. You are performing such an invaluable service as a defacto historian for prospective and new Lacanche owners. We are trying to get up to speed on the ventilation system to go with our new Cluny. We were originally planning to go VAH stainless steel, but are now thinking of switching to a painted cabinetry wood hood with liner so that we don't get too many different elements going around the range. Our KD is quoting $3000 for a 46" wood hood box before the liner purchase, which looks like another $1,350 to $1,800, depending on brand, so far. Has anyone purchased a color-matched Lacanche hood? Didn't notice this so far on old threads. It's a different look, especially because it would add a big punch of color (maybe too big?). We wondered how quiet, what construction, etc. E-mailed AC for more info last night, but would be interested in any experience out there.

RE: Lacanche Ranges Part 11
· Posted by: Zolablue (My Page) on Thu, May 27, 04 at 9:50
The Lacanche hood is one thing that AC did not recommend buying. I don't really remember what was told me about that but it was not even up for discussion. They are the experts and their mission is to make happy customers so I trusted their advice, in fact, when you buy the range they send you all the ventilation information you need and several different lines they recommend. Btw, I'm having email problems due to server problems and they cannot tell me when they will get this fixed. It is making my life difficult right now with everything else I have to do so you're lucky you got those threads when you did. :o)

Ventahood...
· Posted by: Zolablue (My Page) on Thu, May 27, 04 at 9:56
Meant to say we bought the stainless steel Ventahood liner in the 46 3/8" size (referred to as the 48"). I had no clue about this initially but was told we needed this size by VAH if we were ever going to use the grill plate which of course we will. I was told otherwise we could have gone with the 40 3/8" (referred to as the 42"). We paid $1150 for the model BH346PSLD(SS). The "BH" stands for halogen and the SS is for stainless steel.

RE: Lacanche Ranges Part 11
· Posted by: AnnaLeeF (My Page) on Thu, May 27, 04 at 12:03
Thanks for the pricing info! I saw from a previous post that was the liner size (I meant to write 48" for the box) recommended for the Cluny - we also plan to use the grill plate! When DH went to Woodinville to buy the range, they did not say much about the matching hood, but I thought I would just get more feedback to be certain. I did get their info on other recommended brands, just thought it might be neat to have the matching unit. We've looked at the VAH, Independent (the Wolf unit) and one local store recommended the Faber liner as being as good as VAH, but less money. Good luck with your computer issues!

· Posted by: Momto4Kids (My Page) on Thu, May 27, 04 at 12:49
Anna Lee-I've also gone the VAH route. I have two 42" liners in a "custom" hood. Just so you know for price comparison, my "range wall," including the boxed-out hood frame, was $2,600. I think I got the steal of the century if your hood frame is $3,000! The link to my alcove wall is above. I remember talking to Stan, at AC, about the Lacanche hood. His immediate response was that it is "pricey." We laughed, suggested the range is as "pricey" as I need to go, and never talked about it again! Good luck with your research! Deb

RE: Lacanche Ranges Part 11
· Posted by: cooking_SB (My Page) on Thu, May 27, 04 at 14:58
Ana Lee: We went with a liner (modernaire - 52 3/8 ") for our black & chrome Cluny +1. The liner (with internal blowers, available with in-line and external as well) was about $1300. It does operate on rheostats for control and has halogen lighting and removable baffles. Ours is being built into cabinetry (wood) and as ours is being custom made I cannot break out the cost of that one item from the remainder of the bid. I don't think it is even close to $3,000 for the hood enclosure even though it's highly detailed. Unfortunately I have no pix as the liner is at the cabinetmakers now and they wont be installed for about 4 weeks. Good luck. This, strangely enough was one of my more difficult decisions to make...too many choices! All good problems though. Meryl

Good info from you guys! Thanks! Deb, your kitchen is going to be awesome with the Sully +2 center stage. We are going to chat some more with KD because her pricing on this is out of proportion to the rest of the cabinetry. It will be beautifully paneled, with molding and fluting and painted, but it is basically a box. I assume it is less expensive to have a painted sheetrocked enclosure. Meryl, these layers of decisions are a bit taxing. We went into our last KD meeting feeling exuberant that we finally have selected appliances (the Cluny was the last biggie) and cabinetry, only to walk away feeling overwhelmed by the minutia - layers of new hood variations, 3,000 ways to specify the cabinet door configuration (choice is both good and bad) with various stiles, beads, edgings, panels, glass, mullions, etc., etc. We were glazed over after that 4 hours of chat. As we were leaving, another customer who has watched "Something's Got to Give" a dozen times stopped by to check on her design. Seems she wants an exact replica of the Diane Keeton kitchen and the KD's are watching the movie to get it right. As you said, these are all good problems. If we have health, a sense of adventure and can afford a new kitchen, we have so little to complain about.

Hi All! I just wanted to take the opportunity to publically thank Zolablue for her generosity in letting us come into her home and check out her Lacanche, along with several other things. The range is beautiful! And strong and heavy and well crafted. We really liked it alot. We may be ordering one soon. Also got to see the Rohl farm sink we've decided to get, gorgeous! She and her husband were just wonderful. I hope she posts more pictures soon because her kitchen is amazing now and is going to be spectacular when it's all done. Those floors!!! yummmm. Best wishes, Ivette

Just got our burgundy red color tile from AC today, in advance of the Cluny's arrival, for color matching other kitchen items. It is very rich and will be a striking counterpoint to the buttery yellow cabinets, soapstone countertops and saltillo tile floors! We are in for VIVID color! A little departure from the almond & oak 80's laminate kitchen that is going out. After a chat with AC, we are not going to order the Lacanche hood, but will go with the custom box. Still looking a way to cut the cost corner and yet have it coordinate with the custom painted cabinetry.

I haven't posted to the Lacanche thread lately as ours continues to sit in its crate, waiting patiently. But I just wanted to say COOL! to those of you venturing toward the color ones. We got the Provence Yellow and it is stunning. The rest of our kitchen will be fairly neutral (slate, white cabinets, calcatta marble...) Can't wait to see everyone's photos when they're installed.

RE: Lacanche Ranges Part 11
· Posted by: AnnaLeeF (My Page) on Fri, Jun 18, 04 at 23:52
The problem actually is that we each get only one kitchen to design and Lacanche tortures us with so many luscious colors. I could easily go with your Provencal Yellow, spacific, or your elegant black range, anna_c, or ivette's possible French Blue. I love the white, the ivory and the stainless, too. My husband says the green is striking is person. I actually thought DH would buy the black Cluny with brass, a color combo that our kitchen planning had been built around for the last year, but he instead fell hard for the burgundy and that was it! That's fine with me; I enjoy his obvious passion for this shared project. spacific: I am curious - did you order the brass, polished chrome or satin chrome on your Pr. Yellow range? Each trim choice really gives the yellow a different look. I love how you get to "try out" the trim on the color options section of the Lacanche web site. DH loved the yellow one he saw, as well. It was his back-up choice because it works so well with our tile floor, but might have been an overdose if we stuck with butter cabinets. Your color combinations sound marvelous and will really allow the range to be a focal point.

RE: Lacanche Ranges Part 11
· Posted by: spacific (My Page) on Sat, Jun 19, 04 at 0:44
AnnaLeeF--- The burgundy was a really close 2nd choice for me as I've always liked to use claret/burgundy as an accent in other parts of the house. I ended up getting the polished chrome trim. I'll have polished chrome faucet, and a stainless dw & frig... it just seemed to work best for our house, but I think they all work in their own way. We're looking at an end-of-summer completion date for all everything. It's been a long haul since we're adding on and remodeling nearly the entire house.

RE: Lacanche Ranges Part 11
· Posted by: Pirula (My Page) on Sat, Jun 19, 04 at 11:32
AnnaLeeF and Spacific: What a coincidence about the burgundy red. We also have red as an accent color in the rest of the house, given all the "stuff" we've collected in India, China, Egypt etc, where red is a big color. So mostly neutral fabrics on the furniture, warm ivory/yellow walls, and red accents. I sooo thought about the burgundy red for the kitchen, but decided that additional accent would be just too matchy matchy for us. But is IS beautiful, it's like the perfect red. Plus I dunno, with those ivory cabs and that soapstone samples, the french blue is just TO DIE!! I think it's hilarious and wonderful what a role our hubbies are playing. I would probably be satisfied with the black and absolutely ADORE it with our cabinet/counter plans. But Joel is the one who is insisting on the blue!! Too funny, and too wonderul!! So, now that we've decided on the French blue for the Lacanche, I am now thinking of maybe doing the island in a powdery gray blue vs the cherry finish!! What do you think?? It would be oh so English bespoke!! ha ha! Thank goodness I have a year left to plan all this and make final decision!! You guys are the greatest! Ivette

RE: Lacanche Ranges Part 11
· Posted by: spacific (My Page) on Sat, Jun 19, 04 at 13:37
Ivette, I too was thinking of being "safe" early on with stainless or white. It was DH who said, "You love it, go for it in color." The island in the grey-blue sounds wonderful. I like the look of the island different then the perimeter cabinets. What finish will be on the surrounding cabinets? What counter?

RE: Lacanche Ranges Part 11
· Posted by: Pirula (My Page) on Sat, Jun 19, 04 at 14:21
spacific: We're going with ivory/linen white perimeter cabinets. No upper cabinets, just shelves and entire wall of windows. Hardwood floor. We've (okay, I've) been going back and forth and back and forth between soapstone and marble for the perimeter counters. Got a soapstone sample and hubby loves it, so do I. So probably will go with soapstone on the perimeter. For the island, we're planning to do cherry butcher block for part of it, and marble for the prep sink section, at slightly different levels. We were originally going to go with a cherry island stained a nice honey color, but now that hubby has made up his mind on the French Blue Lacanche, and we've decided on the soapstone, AND I just happened to spend a week in London and finished reading the latest issue of 25 Beautiful Kitchens (UK Edition) I have been reminded how much I have always loved English kitchens so WHY NOT? Just do it. I'm really glad you like the idea. I am going to start researching BM and Farrow & Ball on some nice bluish/gray colors for possible use on the island. I mean big deal it can be repainted if we don't like it, or worse, stripped and stained right?? This is sooo much fun. Ivette

Ivette, did you ever have the opportunity to see the beautiful "Warren's Kitchen"? This is worth another post not only because he has a beautiful Lacanche range but he has a drop-dead gorgeous kitchen with creamy cabinets and soapstone and I love the island not to mention the faucets! LOL! I love it all and it is good to keep this one handy for inspiration. :o) I have the stainless Lacanche which I love but I think the colors would be wonderful! You guys that are designing those into your kitchens will have so much fun and have a truly unique look.

Ivette: Yes! Your contrasting painted island idea does sound great and very distinctive. We were on a kitchen tour last month and every kitchen on it had cherry cabinets & granite counters, save one painted one, which was memorable for the difference. I appreciate cherry (my favorite wood) cabs, but I love the painted English or French look even more. Spacific: The chrome trim is really sharp on your range; I prefer it to the brass trim in yellow. Maybe in our next remodel we will go for yellow! It will be positively stunning with your slate, white cabs and marble counters! I am not quite brave enough to get marble, but I have been mulling over having some contrast on the island. We have committed to a Cobra soapstone sink (in the island) & soapstone counters everywhere, and with our saltillo floor, I think switching surfaces may contribute to too busy of a look. We are considering a different countertop surface for our wet bar which is around the corner inside the family room. Still undecided. Zolablue: Warren's kitchen has been one of my absolute favorites since he first posted it! He was kind enough to give me feedback on his cabinets and we are also buying Signature cabs. Warrren's use of color is fabulous - love those walls!

Amy, thanks for showing us more of your gorgeous kitchen! I am totally drooling over your dark oak cabinets. And I usually don't like oak. And the pairing of that austere hardware with details like square pilasters and weighty corbels is divine. And you've acheived a look that is both warm and substantial with very simple lines. Really an amazing space.

Holy Smokes Amy, That is really beautiful. I think I have a new favorite. Well done! Question on the wall spacer thingie. Already have a query into AC, but I'd like to hear what others have done. Have most of you installed your Lacanches with the included spacer with the four inch backsplash? Or have you gotten the island spacer without the backsplash? Orrrr, have you just bagged the whole thing because you have a tile backsplash. Is that a safe option? Thanks much! Ivette

James, A big thanks to you for starting this thread, well not this one per se. As I recall it was a casual mention of your Lacanche in another thread in 2002 that got us where we are today. If you knew my DH you would not think your assessment of the wires was that far fetched. Our house is, for better or for worse, a high tech house. There are miles of wire going every which way and conduit going everywhere. Those wires you see in the picture are XM radio antennae. That is the closest window to the electrical room that gets southern exposure.

Hi Amy, It boggles me, but I guess I am the culprit who started the Lacanche craze here. It all stems from a posting I made in an AGA thread a couple of years back. Too bad I'm not getting commission from AC. I wonder how many sales have been a result of postings on THS? Anyway, your kitchen is a triumph. I'm relieved to know there's an explanation for the wires....other than broadband for Fido. He looks like a pampered pooch, even without email. Cheers, James

All: Thank you so very much for your comments on the island spacer vs. standard backsplash spacer issue. Now I have a new issue directly related to this one. DH and I have decided to go with the island spacer too. But in analyzing how much more it would be sticking out into the aisle, we sort of did the math for the first time. Our counters (mind you this is all on paper at this point, thank goodness) are 25" deep. The Cluny is 25 1/2 inches deep plus the handles. If we do the island spacer, the range will stick out another couple of inches, which is fine I think, BUT with the handles, suddenly this thing is sticking out six inches into the aisle. This SOUNDS just awful. DH is going to play with our drawings and see what he thinks. But what did you all do? Did you make your counters and cabinets deeper then? Or are you Lacanche handles sticking out almost six inches? How does that look? I'm off to look at all your pictures again. All the ranges in the Lacanche literature are either flush, or just sticking out a couple of inches, minus the handle. Like it both ways. We can make the island a little shorter to accomodate the aisle width we want between island and range. BUT we may not be able to make the counters on the range wall any deeper due to the fact that that wall is perpendicular to the entrance to the kitchen which I do not believe can be made any smaller in order to allow more room for a deeper counter, if you get my drift. DH will be looking at this aspect as well. sigh, am I worrying about nothing? Ivette

Okay so, Warren's Lacanche *appears* to be sticking out about three inches, plus the handles. And it's lovely. I can so live with that. Warren if you're out there, what was the math on the counters on either side of your range please?? Amy's also appears to be sticking out about that much. Hard to tell, it might be a little less. Right now I am mostly concerned about the appearance of the range sticking out, not the aisle width issues, which can be remediated by shortening the island, no big. I really welcome your thoughts on this. Can't thank you enough. Ivette P.S. Zola! did you notice Amy's FP drawers? They look inset to me!!

The range "wings" are 24 3/4 deep and my countertop overhand adds another inch. The range itself sits about 3 inches "proud" of the countertop and the handles protrude further than that. I wouldn't worry about the handles - it's the range that you'll notice. Since the range "wings" were already longer than the standard 24" cabinet (for scribing to the wall) we just set them next to the range and eyeballed the depth. We wanted to make sure that the door to the warming cabinet could open all the way without the handle hitting the side cabinet.

TODAY IS THE DAY! CLUNY ARRIVES IN THE PM! We have a bottle of Woodinville wine ready to enjoy as we acclimate to all its burgundy charm. Now maybe selecting those other colors will fall into place a little more quickly . . . .

Pirula, My countertops come to 29 and 1/2 so that they line up with the stainless steel top. Only the handles stick out beyond.

We are seriously IN LOVE tomight! WOW! WOW! Whoopie! The range is stunning. It's my first glimpse, but hubby saw it in Woodinville, so he is just renewing his love affair. We are THRILLED with our Cluny in its jewel tone coat and brass and stainless trim. The oven doors are substantial without making me fear future wrist injury. All the finishing details are works of art or sculpture. The cooking surface is absolutely DE-LOVELY! Love the burners and the whole configuration. So happy we passed on the Wolf Duel Fuel the week before we found Cluny. The single underwhelming aspect is a slightly tinny sound impression of the lower storage drawers below when you open & close them, but no big concern there. The accessories are great - cannot wait until we can install and start trying out the grill plate, griddle, wok ring and simmer plate. There are a few other items that I have not yet explored - I have a few more months to get prepared. We've placed it in the breakfast area, where we can see it in natural light & close to its future installation spot. We propped up a cabinet door for color contrast and we are really very happy with the butter & burgundy combination. In fact, the KD was gritting her teeth when she discovered we were attempting burgundy against saltillo tile, but the tones are actually complementary and we are not concerned now in the least. I have not even explored how to upload and post a digitel image yet, since we did not have any elements to share. Guesss I'll have to get to work figuring that out! Take care and if any of you have not ordered your Lacanche yet, take the plunge - you'll love it. Hubby absolutely cannot take his eyes off it!

Anna, how exciting! I will never forget that day our Lacanche rolled in and both my hubby and I were sooooooo happy! It was even more beautiful than we imagined and we inspected it and quickly shined it up and just stared at it. Well, that is after taking a ton of pictures! I had first heard about Lacanche from a dear friend of mine probably around 1999 and so I just could not believe we actually had this gorgeous range sitting in front of us and so I well remember that great feeling the day we first got to actually see the real thing. I was going to say the same thing Deb just did about posting your photo for you! Seriously, please let us see it asap! I can't wait!!! :o)

Thanks, Zolablue. I was waiting for Deb's email response, but since I have your address, I just sent them off to you. The morning light sort of washes out the yellow in the cabinet sample which we have propped up on the range for contrast. Just noticed I do need to remove all the fingerprints from the handling in moving it into the house! But we are elated!! And thanks again, Deb, for your help!

Those colors are wonderful and would be so much fun. Of course, I do love our SS but I just love this range so much and I think they're all pretty. anna C - I just love it when you talk about how much you love cooking on yours. Green - How perfect for you as an orchid lover, Denice! DH saw a green one and said it is magnificent. Sue: thanks for the good wishes. We are just so pleased to be joining other Lacanche owners in having fun with something that we can use and apreciate every day. Ivette - Cairo - oh the exotic recipes you can collect to try on your French Blue this time next year. Wish we were dancing in Cairo this week. Thanks to THS and current Lacanche owners or we wouldn't have taken this plunge. DH, who needed to go see one first, applauds all who took the risk of buying sight unseen. In reality, it is not a risk, it is just what pictures reveal, a beautifully crafted tool for everyday use. RosyJennifer: How did you ever resolve your hood issue for your Cormatin after the black box you disliked? Amy: Your new kitchen is SO inspiring. What incredible choices you have pulled together. It is such a serene space and should elevate the cooking experience to a whole new level.

Ivette: French Blue was my favorite color! I can't wait to see everyone's pics when the kitchens are finished (including MINE! *eye roll*). We should have our own section in the kitchen gallery, dontcha think? Denise: I'm sure your green Lacanche will be to die for...like one of those bottle-green Jaguars, only more practical. ;-D I have to tell you guys that I made the most amazing roast chicken last week. I didn't do anything special other than slipping some fat under the breast skin, rubbing with garlic, and sprinkling with salt, pepper, and thyme, and then stuffing a quartered lemon up that poor chicken's butt. Basted occasionally with pan juices. It turned out picture-perfect. I swear it could have been on the cover of Bon Appétit! Everyone's so afraid of the small ovens at first, but I think they must concentrate the heat better and use it more efficiently, especially when it comes to roasting.

I LOVE hearing stories of cooking successes!! Thank you Anna. That chicken delicacy was in the gas oven?? Hey, gang: Congrats on your various kitchen projects. Amy, your kitchen is beautiful..... We are running a year late with our project; have decided to start contemplating plague as a way of lowering stress. Up to contractor no. 4.5--but, it could be worse--I could have plague. (It works, kindof....) Since we are running so late, still have time to dither on stoves. James, as you have a Viking, how does the broiler on the Lacanche compare? It does have a broiler, doesn't it? May I ask how you would compare the ranges generally? At this point, feel I've narrowed the choice to another Vike (36, so we can both cook on it) and just possibly, the Cluny. I'm going to France next week, and if I can drag DH away from Tour spotting, will try to see one somewhere over there. Easier than trying to see one here.... Thanks. Jessica

ossobuco1: we are in western CT if you want to stop over. Ours is not hooked up - just sitting in breakfast area until fall, so you cannot try cooking on it yet. There is also a forum owner in Fairfield whose range has been installed for several months, I believe. Another in Ridgefield, but you would have to check with AC to get contact with her; my KD showed me her pictures. Just e-mail if you want to come and I'll give you directions.

O.K. Lacanche owners....WHY did you pick the Lacanche Range and what others where serious contenders? 2. WHAT do you love about them? 3. Does it bother you to use the simmer plates? 4. Has it been ANY problem having 2 smaller ovens VS 2 full size wall ovens? 5. Do you EVER regret your range choice?

RE: Lacanche Ranges Part 11
· Posted by: AnnaLeeF (My Page) on Fri, Jul 16, 04 at 9:22
bnicebkind: cannot report as much as long-time owners since ours is delivered but not hooked up yet, but can answer a few. 1) Love of the design & simplicity of function is the simple answer. It won over the Wolf Dual Fuel and the Five Star Dual Fuel, which both offered the flexibility of cooking features we wanted - 2 different oven types, grill, griddle, etc. Wolf also had the style thing going, but our hearts went wooosh over Lacanche. 2) One thing we love is that all our friends and colleagues want to come see the range and they all immediately smile and keep smiling as they look at it - we love owning something that delights everyone. 3) We got the classique top, not the French top. But ours does come with a simmer plate we can put over the 18,000 btu burner, if we choose to use it. This version doesn't lock you in. French top owners will have to respond to how they love their unique feature. 4) We don't mind the oven size & really wanted to get rid of the huge blockiness in the floor plan that wall ovens create. A full range allows us to open up the look and have additional counter space. Good luck with your own choices.

I have only posted here once but have been reading obsessively for quite some time, and now my time has come to make a little "me, too" announcement: we ordered up our provencal yellow cluny two days ago (happily enough, on our anniversary) and I'm still nervously excited. If I hadn't come accross this forum, I would have gone on blissfully ignorant of Lacanche's existence. As it is, I'm several thousand poorer but immeasurably pleased to join the rarefied ranks of proud Lacanche owners out here. Thanks for all the postings -- even though you didn't know I was reading them! Now I have all the REST of the decisions to make.... wish me luck and sanity!

ANOTHER PROVENCAL YELLOW! Outstanding!!! That is a really gorgeous color. CONGRATULATIONS, dbsb. Welcome, welcome!!!! BTW, Zolablue, where is our LOLA (Lacanche Owners and Lovers Association) convention in 2030? I figure it should be in Burgundy with maybe a French barge cruise (equipped with THE range for gourmet meals)through wine country to get there. We will not be able to afford it until 2030 since we are spending $ for all this kitchen remodeling. Seriously, we have been eyeing The Barge Lady's wonderful offerings (she has a web site by that name) through the canels and rivers of France. Some friends raved about the experience year before last. It would be neat to see the birthplace of Lacanche, where they could offer us all French cooking classes to take maximum advantage of the range.

i posted my question as a new thread, and then found the lacanche thread. here it is again: we are considering a choice between the lacanche cluny and something like a wolf 48 inch dual fuel range. we live in a victorian, and therefore prefer the look of the cluny, but have concerns. (1) are the cluny ovens big enough, or do we need the larger oven of the wolf? (2) what are the quality or functionality differences people have found exist between the cluny and the wolf? (3) do people feel the griddles and grills of the wolf are preferable to the 18000 btu burner or simmer plate on the cluny -- or do you get those same features on the cluny by using the accessories? (4) is the larger size and higher cost of the wolf over the cluny justified? also, how did people who bought the lacanche choose between the simmer plate and the classique/big burner option on top? can only the latter be used with a wok? i would really appreciate hearing from people who have used either of these ranges. thanks very much for your input.

Spacific, Zolablue and AnnaLee -- thanks for the enthusiastic congrats! The rest of the kitchen will be (I think): creamy cabinets -- love the function of frameless but the look of beaded inset, so I may try to get frameless down below and inset for the uppers. Am I foolish? Input welcome. I have NO uppers in my kitchen at present, so anything "upstairs" will be brand new space. Haven't decided on cabinetmaker yet. Considering Cabinetry Direct (based on Janedibber's lovely pics and generally positive experience), also Quakermaid, Brookhaven/Woodmode, CWP, Bertch Legacy, and need to go farm out my cabinet-list to a local (SF Bay Area) custom shop or two. Backsplash:Fell in love with a Walker Zanger renaissance-look floral, very sinuous, in gold, rust, olive and ochre tones painted on travertine tiles. (If you're curious, it's in the url link below). I'm still working out what will fit (backsplash space and overall budget). Considering using the Botticelli (2 of them, one upright, the other below it and upside-down) with a narrow "urbano" border and then the Uccello all around it to form a 36 x 36 square. Would love some seasoned advice on that arrangement, so if anyone's up for perusing the Walker Zanger link and visualising my idea, that would be super. How much height is usable on the backsplash area behind the range before the vent hood? This is a bit of a technical question, as my design will certainly be impacted by the necessity of venting my wonderful new lacanche! Also: can't decide between the look of an under-cabinet vent-a-hood in stainless vs. hiding the vent-a-hood in a wooden cabinet-matched enclosure. In areas NOT behind the range, Im considering using Giallo Real marble for the remaining backsplash and a honed creme ceasarstone for the counters. I'm a bit concerned about having too many different materials, but then again I'm also wary of using the giallo real for the counters as well as the backsplash -- I've seen some comments on the kitchen forum lately about marble but it's still very hard to committ oneself either way without having lived with a certain thing for a good amount of time. (Everyone out here faces the same quandary, I know.) I've never seen anyone's kitchen with Giallo Real counters -- has anyone out there seen it used that way? Definitely will use an undermount sink, but I'm still undecided whether to go stainless or white (fireclay or otherwise). Walls will be a soft cinnamon color. It's a kitchen/family room already, but we're knocking out a wall and expanding the family room portion of the space, basically doubling it in size, (we doubled the kids, going from one to two back in January) thus changing the room from a long rectangular space into an elongated "L" shape. The floors will be white oak laid in to match the rest of the main floor of the house (a 1923 home in the Oakland Hills). Still not fully persuaded on the need for a "true" built in fridge with its attendant, truly sky-high pricetag. (One might ask: what about the pricetag of that fine new lacanche, I know, but in my mind the expense for a range is more justifiable than for a fridge. I do love -- who wouldn't? -- the smooth integration of those 24" units, but wonder whether I could cut some corners and go with a shallow-depth in stainless-steel, such as the new JennAir side-by-side? I agonized between the burgundy red cluny and the provencal yellow for weeks, right up until the very last minute when, on the phone with Molly at Art Culinaire, I finally weighed in with the provencal yellow decision. Spacific -- I'd love to be reminded what the rest of YOUR kitchen is/is going to be! You're the only onther provencal yellow owner I am aware of -- there is not a single picture of one installed in a kitchen available on the lacance/art culinaire website. Well, I must get back to decision making while the little ones are napping! Looking forward to participating in this friendly dialogue out here! --- dmsb

Dmsb--- I wandered a bit around the WZ site, but couldn't quite visualize all with your backsplash. The colors all sound so rich and warm and elegant. I'm sure you will have an amazing space, completely different than what we're doing. It's funny, when we picked the yellow, I got some comments from folks about how tough it might be to design around or about being "stuck" with such a color. But I've thought of dozens of concepts and finally settled on an eclectic unfitted approach. We'll be starting out fairly basic: custom white painted cabinets, simple shaker inset doors, slab drawer fronts, reusing t&g doors from original 1917 house into side panels, open upper shelves; white honed calcatta marble counters, franke fireclay apron sink. Stainless DW, hood, shelves/potracks. White subway tile wall behind range and sink area backsplash. Vermont grey slate floors. Eat in kitchen with farm table and bench and a couple of comfy chairs. Room for a standalone piece or two, but no real hurry. I really want just simple, great basic materials to start with and then I'm happy to let the space evolve over time. The range will be the focal point, so most of the rest will be more about texture than anything else. At this point, the remaining wall space will most likely be painted a complementary deep warm grey, so they kind of float away. What's your timing on the remodel? I can't wait to see your finished project.

Dmsb: All I could think about as I read your post was "cinammon walls, and provencal yellow lacanche". OMG!! That is going to be beautiful! Does anything else really matter??? ;) You are making some gorgeous choices!! I LOVE the provencal yellow, part of me still wants it. I mean I am excited about our French Blue that will come *someday* but a small part of me chickened out because I thought the blue would be "safer." BRAVA for having the compunction to go for the yellow. You too spacific!! Of course, DH really wanted the French Blue, so I will just tell myself that..... Don't get me wrong! I will love the blue! But will always have a hint of color envy. Best, Ivette

There always comes a point where the person designing/choosing the kitchen has worn out the interest/patience of the other person(s) in the household who will one day share the space, and so it is a particular pleasure to join in on and be a recipient of all the enthusiastic info-sharing and excited responses of fellow decision-makers! I saw that the Walker Zanger link I tried to put in came up as their home page, not as the specific tile I am planning to use, -- I will try to post the link again, but just in case the same thing happens again, the way to find the line I'm using is to click on "Stone" then "decortive stone" and then the "firenze" group. Spacific -- your cool colors (whites and slate greys) will be lovely and really set the provencal yellow lacanche in high relief. People aren't accustomed to seeing yellow for the range -- probably a part of yours and my incentive to get one! -- but it is certainyl a tried and true component of so many kitchens, more typically on the walls or the upholstery/window treatments. I think the idea of making the hearth itself a golden, glowing thing is so appealing, and I would love to see pictures of your kitchen as its coming along (not to mention when it's all done!) Pirula: the blue Lacanches are stunning -- who said blue wasn't a "color"? No need for envy -- it'll be fabulous. THe thing is that Lacanche makes it difficult for us all not to imagine our kitchens some other way if we'd made the fundamental choice (which color range) differently. My mother joked to me: just get two of them, dear!" I think I recall seeing some postings by a man in southern california who owns two homes across from each other and plans to put a lacanche in each one. Poor man -- he'll have to choose twice, whereas we all just had to choose once. Life has its trials for us all, just different in scale and scope! But if there's cause for envy, owning two different lacanches has to qualify...

dsmb: Your vision is exciting. I must admit that I cannot locate the WZ tiles you refer to, but I have no doubt they are stunning from your description. The cinnamon wall color grabbed me, too! The cream cabinets and countertops and marble sound wonderful and cooling in combination with the deep rich Lacanche yellow and cinnamon. VERY EXCITING! OOPS! You new post with a path to the tile just popped up, so I'll check it out. Pacific: I adore yellow and grays together. My designer friend hates all grays, which I fail to understand. I have a serene pastel pearly gray bedroom which connects to the sky outside and it seems like being in a cloud with the slightest hints of lavender, in a certain light. Your whites and grays are going to bring a classic touch while the yellow range will be the sun and the sizzle. Wonderful Choices!!! And our French Blue friend Ivette - your range will be the lovely cooling counterpoint to your incandescent enthusiasm and the jumping off point to a thousand design possibilities. I cannot imagine living in any space without a significant dose of blue. How wonderful that it will be in the heart of your home! Now you are down to only months to go to returning home and getting started!

OK - can't give seasoned advice on backsplash layout per se, but I did find the Botticelli and Uccello (not the Urbano border). They are richly beautiful and, used in proximity to the range, would indeed enhance the room. Very appealing!

I just found out my range has NOT yet left France! Hopefully, any day now. As some of you already know, it has been on order since May 2003! Yes, 2003! So, a few more weeks, at least, it seems. The good news is...it's built! It's ready! The August factory holiday shut-down won't affect me (I hope). My cabs are going in now. I'll post pix when it arrives. To those of you with color...Oh how I wish I had the nerve!! The blue is stunning. I love the yellow. The burgundy, wow! I opted for the black, figuring I could change paint color easier than changing the range. Besides, this range is now going to go everywhere I go. If we ever move from this house we're building...THE RANGE WILL NOT CONVEY!!

Deb, don't feel too bad. I ordered my range March 2003 and received it the first of June 2003. I had no idea I'd be waiting so long and can you believe that you are actually getting your cabinets installed before me and you are building an entire new house! So I understand how long the wait feels. You will see your Lacanche very soon and I guarantee it will be worth the wait. Just a little more time and then that great, big, beautiful Sully+2 will be yours! :o)

Deb: Okay, that's IT!! WHERE can I find these emoticons??? :) Dont' worry! Waiting seems to be a part of the Lacanche game, man. I have to wait a year before I can even push the button on the build!! sigh. It'll all be worth it!! But gosh, didn't you say that you had been told it would deliver in July? and now it's July and you're only JUST finding out it hasn't even shipped yet? Or did I just misunderstand? Not to worry! It'll be here before you know it! Lordy it is going to be beautiful!! Best, Ivette

Thanks Z! I know it'll be worth the wait! Periodically, I look through pictures you all have posted and drooled over your Lacanches (installed or not). Ivette: Stan called me about two weeks ago and said my range is next in queue to board a plane and be on its way. He also said they leave on Wednesdays. I guess no ranges left last Wednesday. So perhaps today, if all this is really how it works. It'll sit in Customs a couple of days. Then I'll get the call from the moving company! So, it's really any time now. I'm just eager, eager, eager! Oh, and www dot smileycentral dot com. That's where I found the free download of tons of emoticons. I don't have the one Weed has of the smiley eating popcorn. I love that one! The similey icon put itself in my toolbar for ease of use. I like putting them in emails, too!

Deb, sorry you're having to wait so long, but I have to tell you that that icon made me laugh so hard. Don't worry--your Sully will be here soon!!! (It's a lot like waiting to go into labor and see a new baby, isn't it? But at least the movers will be doing the laboring, and not you! *g*)

Yay Deb!! That doesn't sound so bad at all!! It'll be here before you know it!! I am going to check out the emoticons site, thank you! My husband is sitting with me right now and your tissue emoticon above has him in stitches. Ivette

I just got off the phone with Stan! My range got on the plane today! He warned me it may take a couple of weeks to get it through Customs, then to me. We'll probably be on Part 12 of this thread before I get to post pictures! Come back in a couple of weeks and look for pictures! Deb

That is great news, Deb! After you wrote, I didn't want to write in about mine and make you feel badly - but she just came in today!!! It was delivered in perfect condition - the delivery man moved it into my garage and I took the crate apart (I could almost have done it with my bare hands, I was SO eager). It was such a rush to see that gorgeous green and chrome machine! Neighbors and friends saw me out working on it and stopped by. No one had ever seen a Lacanche before, and they were all praising it. I couldn't take my eyes off it for the longest time. So now I want this kitchen done! And we've only just started (cement block laid tomorrow, framing starts Monday). It's going to be a long summer, waiting... Denise

Deb, soon...very soon! :o) YAY!!! I'm so darn excited for you and you are going to have the mother of all Lacanches - you know that, doncha? ;^D Denise - CONGRATS! I want to see pictures of that green Lacanche. I bet it is just beautiful. You can't believe the men who came into our house while we were trying to find a contractor and various other things that commented on that Lacanche sitting there. At times it really caught me off guard until I realized everyone was going to notice it and be impressed and interested to know what it was. My tilesetters just loved it and these are older guys you would not think even care about something like that but it is different and unique and outstanding. My goodness, I can't believe that thing will actually be hooked up next week. (I think! :o)
